Stucco Tip #3: DIY Minor Stucco Repairs

We hope our previous tips have been helpful in keeping your stucco clean and well-inspected. Today, we’re excited to share some guidance on how you can handle minor stucco repairs yourself, saving you time and money.

Tip #3: DIY Minor Stucco Repairs

Small “hairline cracks” (less than 1/16”) can often be repaired without professional help. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making those minor fixes yourself:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Exterior caulk (do not use full silicone caulk)
  • Rag
  • Sponge
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Paint (matching your stucco color)
  • Paintbrush

Steps for Repairing “Hairline” Cracks:

1. ⛏️Prepare the Area: Start by using a rag to clean the area around the crack. Lightly spray the area with water to remove any loose debris or dirt.

2. 🖌️Apply the Exterior Caulk: The first step is to cut the tip (at an angle) of the caulking tube as small as possible. Next, you will want to apply a bead of caulk along the crack in an even and generous manner. Be sure to have a consistent bead without any gaps, you will want the entire crack to be covered in a bead so it is sealed entirely.

3. 🧈Spread the Caulking: After the caulk is applied, take your finger and rub the caulk into the crack. Spread it in all directions, in order to fill the crack entirely. Blend the edges to match the texture of your existing stucco as closely as possible.

4. 🧽Wipe Off Excess Caulking: Use a sponge to clean up the area around the crack, while keeping the caulking inside of the crack itself. Let it dry for a day, or a few hours, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.

5. 🎨Paint the Cracks: Finally, apply paint to the repair areas to match the rest of your stucco. Use a paintbrush or small roller. For the best results, paint the entire wall for a nice blend.

🦺Safety Tips:

  • Always wear protective gear such as gloves and safety glasses when handling repair materials.
  • Ensure good ventilation if you’re working with stucco indoors.
